Holistic care treats the whole cat: mind, body, and spirit. That typically means a combination of traditional and what might be referred to as complementary medicine. For instance, a holistic way to treat cancer could include radiotherapy and herbal supplements.

PET WELLBEING

After Momo was diagnosed with cancer, I joined the Feline Cancer Support Group on Facebook. These people have an incredible wealth of knowledge. I was surprised by one of the most highly recommended cancer support options — immunity supplements made from mushrooms. Specifically the ones manufacturer by Pet Wellbeing. Many had described how these supplements seemed to improve their cats overall wellbeing during and after cancer treatments. From their website:

“Medicinal mushrooms are excellent additions to radiation and chemotherapy. Their antioxidant properties neutralize free radicals, which in turn prevents cellular damage and inhibits the spread of cancer. Mushrooms are necessary alongside conventional treatment because they make normal cells more resilient to stress. Mushroom supplements help cells recover a lot faster from harsh chemicals used during treatment.

The three main ingredients found in medicinal mushroom supplements include reishi, maitake and turkey tail. Reishi, in particular, is praised for its anti-inflammatory effects. This is important for sick pets because cancer stems from chronic low-grade inflammation. Maitake can stunt tumor growth and prevent viral infections in immunocompromised pets.”

Plenty of other companies make immune supplements, with or without mushrooms, but this seems to be the choice among those with feline cancer patients. I purchased their cancer kit for Momo; however, he found the flavor incredibly offensive. I tried mixing it with his favorite treats and eventually tried using a syringe to administer it, but he would just throw it up. I opted for NaturVet’s Mushroom Max supplement. It has some extra ingredients that make it more palatable, and I’m able to crush up the treats into Momo’s food so he’ll eat it.

You can debate the efficacy of medicinal mushrooms in fighting cancer, but there really are no downsides to feeding such supplements. I’m willing to give them a shot for the possibility that they will support Momo’s health and immunity during this challenging time.

FISH OIL

Coldwater fish oils (salmon, trout, menhaden) offer many health benefits for your cat including joint, heart, and skin/coat health, as well as immune support. The health benefits from fish oil are attributed to two long chain essential fatty acids (EFAs) —  eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) fatty acids. Both EPA omega-3 and DHA omega-3 are polyunsaturated “good fats.” Several scientific studies have demonstrated that fish oils can help slow down the development of cancer.

study conducted on the effect of fish oil on the remission and survival time of dogs with lymphoma showed that supplementation of fish oil resulted in an increase in disease-free interval and survival time for dogs with lymphoma. Another study also showed the potential for EFAs to help enhance the effect of conventional therapies as well as reduce the side effects associated with chemotherapeutic agents.

Fish oils slow down and possibly inhibit tumor growth by stimulating the differentiation of cancer cells. This means that the cancer cells are stimulated to turn into specific types of cells which will eventually lead to their limited division and survival. DHA in fish oils works to promote the differentiation of cancer cells. When differentiation happens, the cancer cells are unable to continue dividing thus the tumor is unable to grow.

Omega-3 fatty acids may also prevent weight loss in pets with cancer that can lead to cachexia or wasting syndrome.

I started giving Momo salmon oil with his food after his diagnosis. Whether or not it helps him fight cancer, I’m happy to know it will benefit him in so many other ways! Plus, he loves the fishy flavor.

STRESS MANAGEMENT

Chronic stress can promote cancer development, progression, and therapy resistance by the continuous release of stress hormones, immune suppression, and persistent low-grade inflammation. Because of this, its important to make sure your cat stays comfortable and calm during its cancer treatment. Here are some good ways to management your cat’s stress levels:

  • Feliway Diffuser: these are a popular drug-free way to promote a calm environment for your cat. These diffuse a liquid into the air which mimics cats’ natural facial pheromone that they mark their territory with when they feel safe, secure, and in control of their environment. Your cat will associate the smell of these pheromones with feeling safe and happy, thereby reducing stress.

  • Quiet Environment: while your cat is recovering from or receiving treatment, make sure they have a quiet safe space away from any chaos or loud noises. Fill it with cozy spots for them to curl up and hide, and other enrichment items. Feeling safe in their own space will help manage their stress levels and let them rest.

  • CBD Oil: cannabidiol oil (CBD) is well known for its stress-reducing benefits. CBD oil may also help manage symptoms and side effects such as pain, decreased appetite, nausea, or inflammation. Some CBD companies also claim that CBD oil has antitumor and anticancer properties; however, these are not well researched in cats. Make sure you choose a CBD oil that is specifically formulated for cats.
